Surfer’s Delight in the a.m., p.m., and any time in between. Huntington Beach is one of my favorite places in California. Located in Orange County, the palm tree lined streets hold in the vast expansion of beach shops, fish tacos, and surfers. It’s where surfers come a dime a dozen, there’s consistent surf all year long, and plenty of sunshine to go around.
I got to the beach around 9am and the ocean was already full of surfers, from years of experience to just learning to stand up on the board. Many of them still hadn’t gotten out of the water when I left around 2pm. There was an endless supply of surfers bobbing patiently all day but every so often a great wave is challenged by an even better rider and everyone from the sand and pier stops to admire. Even if you’re a first timer, boards and wetsuits can be rented right there on the beach with a little food hut to greet you after your rides.
The tall-bronzed statue of the Duke Kahanamoku surfer himself stands at the streets edge, overlooking his fellow surfers as protector of swells. It’s crazy when the skilled surfer you may of watched all morning surprises you when he’s actually a 50year old coming out of the ocean from ripping apart the waves. I think the Cali sun has some sort of keep you young, age defying, powers.
California makes you forget you’re still in North America. It has its own feel to it when you’re recharging just to expand very little energy. It’s September here and feeling fantastic, take a trip if you have a chance.
Huntington Beach, there’s a reason they call it Surf City, U.S.A. 10 Days was over in a blink.
