With fall rolling in and my love for Sunday Funday forever growing I thought it would be fun to create my own Sunday Funday sweatshirt! And what’s better than a crew neck and flannel in fall? I loved this project because I knew it was something I could use all the time and I had the chance to work with type and fabric which I’ve always loved. So here ya have it ladies and gents, your new
DIY FLANNEL SUNDAY FUNDAY SWEATSHIRT
Wear it with pride my inappropriate commenting, flannel wearing, whiskey drinking soul mates.
>>SUPPLIES<<
grey Hanes crew neck, scissors, 1/2 yard flannel material, grey thread, measuring tape, needle, fabric glue, letter printouts
>>INSTRUCTIONS<<
1. First you want to try on your sweatshirt and make a little mark however far up you want the flannel to reach on the sleeves. I chose for mine to reach about half way up my bicep.
2. Measure the length from the top of the wrist to your mark, add 1 inch, and cut a long strip of your flannel fabric to this height and equalling over double the width of the sleeve.
3. Mine was about 32 inches wide and 16 inches tall. Fold in half horizontally (now 32×8), then vertically (now 16×8). Cut along the fold ending up with two 16×8 inches flannel sections still folded hotdog style.
4. Wrap your flannel fabric around the left sleeve making sure all fabric is smoothed out.
5. Cut flannel along edge of sleeve leaving one side slightly longer than the other.
6. Glue edges of flannel down on each of the short sides. (bicep and wrist) This will give the fabric a cleaner look and avoid unravelling.
7. Glue down flannel to wrist and at bicep.
8. Glue the slightly longer edge over lapping the other along the entire flannel section up the sleeve.
9. Your sleeves should be looking something like this! Now take a sip of your drink and give yourself a big ol’ pat on the back.
Now for the important message….
10. Space your letters out along the remaining flannel fabric and cut a long strip to fit all letters.
Here are examples of the fabric after I cut it in half to make individual letter cuts easier.
11. Now cut fabric to the size of each individual letter.
12. Begin pinning paper letter print out to each piece of fabric.
13. Cut along each letter edge, removing pins as you go. Should be looking something like this.
14. Glue letters onto crew neck making sure to get each edge. Lack of meticulous gluing now will result in frayed crew neck later. Four washes and you’d have a UNDA FU AY crew neck.
15. Now you don’t have to do this last step. But if your an avid Sunday drinker combined with being a huge clutz, the weekly washings may cause the flannel to fray. Or if you plan on wearing it every Sunday (because I don’t know why you wouldn’t) it’s best to add the extra security of sewing the ends down. Don’t worry about being precise, half the fun of DIY is the hand made look.
And there you have it! Your very own SUNDAY FUNDAY Flannel Crew Neck!
