I had a really extended amount of awkward years. Like really extended. Third grade me was a version of young Hermoine with massive frizzy hair trying to use big words and wearing my brothers clothes. Needless to say when I found out a boy liked me I was shocked and equally ecstatic. The first boy to ever like me, this is a whole new world! So when Valentine’s Day came around I begged my mom to take me shopping to buy him a gift. I got to the store and with mama bear’s encouragement I thought I’d found the best gift ever… a GIANT box of Altoids. Do you remember these? They were about the size of a 15″ mac book pro.
We got on the bus that next morning and he gave me my present; a beautiful gold heart necklace with my birthstone inside. I shrieked in what seemed like excitement but was actually absolute terror at what I’d bought him. All day long I hid his present in my backpack while I wore and showed off my necklace. It wasn’t until we were getting off the bus, yes we were also neighbors, that I shoved his gift in his hands and ran home. I’ve NEVER bought Altoids again.
I still can’t look at Altoids without laughing. So at 25 years old I figured it was time to release that memory of embarrassment and make my own fondant DIY Altoids to enjoy. They turned out great! I loved how easy it was to knead the Wilton fondant and they hardened just how I needed them to. The only thing that would make these better is if I’d strung them onto a necklace and wore it around to nibble on all day. Not as pretty as the gold heart one but that’s okay.
These make a great little treat to put out when company comes over and they really help with something to suck on to prevent over snacking during the day. Fill a little container and keep it in your purse or car for a quick minty breath freshener or as I did, give them as a super cute baby shower favor!
I’ll probably finish all my fondant DIY Altoids before my 3rd grade crush ever finishes that his giant box… But ya live and you learn. P.S. I’m a baller gift giver now.
::MATERIALS::
Wilton Fondant, food coloring, doTERRA Spearmint Essential Oil, doTERRA Cinnamon Essential Oil, jumbo smoothie straw
::HOW TO::
- Separate your fondant into 5 even balls.
*You can also make homemade fondant. I prefer ones that are made with powdered sugar and not marshmallows. These are mints and you want them to harden and the marshmallow fondant recipes don’t harden correctly.
2. Flatten your fondant balls and add 2-4 drops (depending on your color preferences) of food coloring and 3 drops essential oil to the center. Fold until fully combined.
3. Roll your colored fondant to 1/2 inch thick slabs. Using your jumbo smoothie straw, punch mint size circles out of your fondant slab and place it in a bowl. (I pushed straight down on the straw then blew on the other end to shoot it out of the straw and into the bowl) It’s pretty fun!
4. Let your mints sit out over night, uncovered to harden. Wake up to beautiful, delicious DIY Altoids! Isn’t it so nice to know exactly what’s in the mints your eating!?

Oh my gosh, that is awesome! My stepfather is a total Altoids junkie and I’d love to make him some! I’ve never made fondant, though. Do you have a link to a favorite recipe? Thanks so much! 🙂 Lisa
Thanks so much Lisa! That’s awesome, then he will definitely love these! I used this recipe using the corn syrup and took out the glycerine and flavoring. Have fun making them!
Do you know if there’s a way to make these sugar free? Hubby is diabetic.
