Curly hair is a fickle beast with a real mind of its own. What’s even harder than maintaining your curls is getting them back to life and keeping them beautiful after you’ve been straightening for years.
It’s going to take a few months so know you’re in for some work and time and don’t give up! It’s so worth it in the end. Try your hardest to not burn your hair (blow dry, straighten, curl) and treat it twice a week with a mask or oil. Now if you’re starting from unfried hair and just not sure what to do with it you’re lucky!
I was starting from fried ends and frizz heaven so when I started actually putting in the work, it proved to be an adventure. I had finally decided to put down the straightener and invest time trying out curly hair products, talking to stylists, and reading up on how best to wash, protect, and grow curly hair well. An expensive and timely adventure; one I’m hoping to save you some time and money when you embark on your adventure.
Throughout the years, I have developed a solid routine to keep my curly hair healthy, strong, growing and frizz-free. Today, I would like to share it with you!
- Wash your hair with sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. Preferably with an enriching oil like Natural Organic Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner.
- If it’s not a wash day then wet your hair slightly and comb through just to get out the tangles; not too wet or it will take forever to dry and drip product all down your back.
- Apply a mixture of DevaCurl Ultra Defining Hair Gel and Garnier Fructis Style Curl Shaping Spray Gel.
- Let dry completely, at this point your hair will look like crunchy badly separated hair. Use either an old t-shirt or Microfiber Hair Towel Wrap. to scrunch all the crunchiness out of your hair. This will give you the volume and curls without losing the shape and control. I call this scrunching the crunch.
- Rub a nickel size dollop of Garnier Fructis Style Curl Treat Defining Smoothie between your hands and rub over your hair as a light top layer. This product relaxes flyaways.
TIPS
1.Only wash your curls 2-3 times a week. Sounds kinda gross but not only will your hair get oily less quickly but curly hair breaks easily and needs time with its natural oils to stay less frizzy.
2. NEVER use anything to dry your hair except an old t-shirt or a Microfiber Hair Towel Wrap.
3. Only brush your hair with a wide tooth comb. I suggest Revlon Tangle Free Comb or 100% Natural Sandalwood Hair Comb.
4. Apply a hair mask 2-3 times a month.
BONUS: If you want an extra boost, try one of my favorite hair growth vitamins!
Searching and testing different techniques and layers for years has finally gotten me to these products and this routine. I hope it helps save you loads of time and money! What are your favorite products and curly hair routine tips?
